Bastrop continues to recover from 2011 wildfires

Posted: Updated:

Two years after devastating wildfires, Bastrop County continues to make progress on restoring the community.

City, county and state leaders met, Saturday, to discuss where to go from here and how to spend millions of dollars in new state funding.

Bastrop County and Bastrop State Park each received an additional $4 million dollars in state funding to help rebuild. The money will be used to restore the county and prevent future fires by clearing brush and other fuels.

The state park plans to add 2 million trees over the next five years. Texas parks and wildlife says the trees are not only important for the environment, but symbolically that Bastrop is moving forward.

"It's not only a natural resource that we all love, but it's important to people. That is representative of Bastrop County," said Jamie Hackett.

Two people were killed and more than 1600 homes were destroyed in the 2011 fires.
