The lanes of Highway 290, near Dripping Springs, in Hays County are back open after a two-car accident that took three people's lives.
Half of the people that were inside these crumpled, smashed vehicles didn't survive.
"We have three deceased, one critical and one minor. The driver of the Honda Accord is in minor condition, also at the hospital being treated," said DPS Trooper Robbie Barrera.
She says the 911 call came into Hays County at about 1:30 Friday afternoon.
Barrera said, "The Honda Accord behind me was turning left onto Belterra, so their speed was not great, but it is still under investigation as to the speed of the truck."
Investigators say the driver of the blue Accord was traveling westbound on Highway 290 and was trying to make a left onto Belterra Drive.
Eyewitnesses say, as the light turned yellow, the Honda Accord went to turn and that's when the gold Dodge Ram pickup truck, hauling a trailer with cement bags, crashed into the car.
"Everyone was in the interior of the pickup truck, there were five individuals in the pickup truck, we know that some were seat belted and we're unsure about the others," said Barrera.
The impact for the truck was head-on, as it smashed into the front right corner of the Accord.
Barrera said, "The license plates on both vehicles indicate they're from the Austin area."
The deadly accident caused major traffic congestion for drivers traveling westbound on 290.
"For the safety message, just look and make sure that it's clear before you enter into the intersection," Barrera added.
Children were not inside the car or truck.
