Christie Tours Seaside Boardwalk After Massive Fire

Posted: Updated:
SEASIDE PARK, N.J. -

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie toured the Seaside boardwalk a day after a massive fire destroyed the southern end of it.

Video footage shows Christie getting an up-close look at the portions damaged last year by Superstorm Sandy and making his way toward the parts on which a blaze raged for eight hours Thursday.

The governor met with locals Friday, shaking hands, touring their businesses and in a few cases consoling them with a hug.

The flames from the fire that traveled from Seaside Park into Seaside Heights destroyed parts of the iconic Jersey Shore boardwalk, including dozens of businesses.

Firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading even further by ripping out a section of reconstructed boardwalk and piling up sand as a fire break.

And while the fire was 95 percent contained as of Friday morning, Christie said it could take days to extinguish the remaining hot pockets.

Meanwhile, officials are once again trying to figure out how much it will cost to rebuild the walkway that was wrecked less than a year ago.
