Possible School Merger Has Neshaminy Parents Upset

Posted: Updated:
BUCKS COUNTY, Pa. -

In Bucks County, a possible school merger plan has parents upset and they're planning to make their feelings heard at a school board meeting.

FOX 29's Stephanie Esposito reported from Samuel Everett Elementary School on Tuesday.

It's one of three Neshaminy elementary schools that could be closed to make way for one brand new super-school. As you can imagine, it's brought on quite an intense debate.

"It would be horrible; absolutely horrible," Ed Kern said.

Neshaminy School District is trying to decide whether or not to close Lower Southampton, Oliver Heckman and Samuel Everett elementary schools to make way for one Mega School to accommodate kids from all 3 schools on Tawanka Elementary school grounds.

Ed Kern is petitioning to keep Neshaminy Elementary school. He says there's a fad of "supersizing" elementary schools and it is in the name of saving maintenance costs.

Ed Kern started a petition to stop the consolidation. He's got about 1300 signatures.

Leah Feliciano, the mom of a Samuel Everett kindergartner, is one of them.

"It leaves people feeling unstable, knowing how to prepare for where the kids going," Feliciano said. "The transportation, everything."

The District says it plans to refinance Neshaminy's existing bonds and borrow $50 million more to be paid back by in 25 years with no impact on local property taxes. The new building, the district says, will save $2 million a year and would be completed by 2015. The Feasterville building would accommodate 1200 hundred students, many of them bused from Levittown.

"People in favor of the consolidations say it's an emotional reaction, but I think it's good to be emotional about your kids, your community, your schools," Ed Kern said.

The president of the school board told FOX 29 that the changing interest rates in the last few weeks may force them back to the drawing board or they may vote for a referendum and put it in the hands of the voters. The school board met on Tuesday night in Maple Point Middle School at 7 p.m. The superintendent decided to send the idea back to committee so that a new plan could be drafted.
