ROMEO, Mich. (WJBK) -

Ronald Dimambro Jr., the Washington Twp. man accused of attacking his girlfriend's toddler son, has pleaded not guilty charges of first degree murder.

Dimambro was arraigned Tuesday in Romeo District Court and continues to be held without bond on felony murder and first-degree child abuse in the Aug. 27 death of Damian Sutton.

Sutton died at Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit, less than a week after authorities say Dimambro shook and beat him. Dimambro was babysitting Damian.

Dimambro was originally charged with first degree child abuse, but Macomb Co. Prosecutor Eric Smith increased the charges after medical examiner's determined Sutton's death was caused by blunt force trauma.

Dimambro has been ordered to undergo a competency examination. Defense lawyer Randy Rodnick says he's interested in "any mental health issues that might affect the case."

A pre-exam conference is scheduled for Sept. 26.
