CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A massive explosion leveled a Lowell, Ind. home Monday night, killing a neighbor who was checking a vacant house. Fire investigators said Tuesday that the cause was a propane blast.

Lowell Fire Chief Clint Gorball said crews were called out to the home off of Route 2 near I-65 just after 7 p.m. Monday.

Police say at least one home was completely destroyed and several other homes caught fire nearby. The second house that caught fire was empty.

More than 100 first responders are still on the scene Monday evening. As of 10 p.m., State Road was closed between Grant Road and SR-55.

Authorities would not immediately say if anyone was hurt, but one person was seen being loaded into an ambulance. Victor Strain, 43, did not survive his injuries.

Fire and police told FOX 32 News this was an accident and if homeowners detect something that doesn't smell right, they should call the fire department.
