Mixing guns & alcohol, the pros and cons

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Booze and bullets don't mix - that's the premise behind a proposed ordinance scheduled to go to Chicago's City Council this week.

"You're coming here to a restaurant to have a good time, you don't need to carry a gun, period," said Laura Ruiz.

"I agree with that. Judgment is impaired when you have alcohol. You should not have a firearm when you are dining out or drinking at restaurants," said Ryan Arnold.

Keefer's Restaurant in River North is ahead of the curve - Laura Ruiz and Ryan Arnold were greeted by these posted warnings promoting a firearm free zone.

"If we were in the South, Southeast, Montana, maybe even in the Northwest that's a different conversation but in Chicago will people not frequent restaurants because of not being able to carry a firearm? Absolutely not, no," said Arnold.

Expect to see more firearm free zone warnings at restaurants citywide.

On Friday the Finance Committee endorsed Alderman Ed Burke's proposed ordinance to ban firearms at businesses that sell alcohol.

"It also seems absolutely ironic and hypocritical that here you have a Chicago alderman who has had tax payer funded body-guarded, who is rumored to have them transport him to restaurant and bars and other places, even across state lines and yet he can carry, they can carry," said Todd Vandermyde, a legislative liaison for the National Rifle Association.

Vandermyde says the proposal undermines the law.

"This is just another one of their veiled attempts to try and regulate something that the legislatures reserved for themselves the ability to regulate," said Vandermyde.
