City Council considers gun-free zones for businesses that serve alcohol

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

As concealed carry gets closer to reality in Illinois, a major consideration is whether you'll feel safe in restaurants and other businesses, knowing the person next to you may be carrying a gun.

The debate continues at City Hall Monday, where Chicago aldermen are talking about the mix of guns and alcohol.

Expect to see more firearm free zone warnings at restaurants citywide if a new proposal passes. Restaurants and businesses that serve alcohol may be required to make their property a gun-free zone.

City Council's finance committee endorsed Alderman Ed Burke's proposed ordinance to ban firearms at businesses that sell alcohol.

The alderman plans to seek a full city council vote Wednesday, but outside of City Council, the new ordinance is being met with mixed opinions.

Some Chicago residents think it's a good idea. One resident said that when people drink alcohol they have a tendency to act differently. He wouldn't want somebody to get hurt. He doesn't want to get hurt himself.

Another resident said it doesn't make sense, because those who will carry a weapon on their person every day would not be able to eat in a restaurant or enter a business that doesn't allow guns - even if they want to - because they wouldn't have anywhere to put their gun.

The Illinois State Rifle Association said this is local government going way too far.

"This is just another one of their veiled attempts to try and regulate something that the legislatures reserved for themselves the ability to regulate," NRA lobbyist Todd Vandermyde said.

Either way, Burke has called the proposed ordinance "common sense," saying it made no sense to ban weapons in bars but allow them in liquor-serving restaurants. He also said they have a right to do it because the finance committee controls the liquor licenses.
