Tim Skubick: Rick Snyder as U-M president? Rumors swirl

(WJBK) -

President Rick Snyder.

No.  Not that president.  Rick Snyder THE president…of the University of Michigan.

Believe it or not the notion has been floating around this town ever since the Right to Work confrontation last December.  At the time a bunch of Democrats were sitting around the table when someone tossed out the U-M spot for one of its most famous grads.

Are you scratching your head wondering why?

Here was the thinking.  If you offer the job to the governor in return for a veto of the Right to Work bill, problem solved for labor.

A source in the room confirms it was out there, but obviously never materialized.

Then last April came the announcement that the current U of M president was riding off into the sunset.  The rumor mill kicks in one more time.  Folks on campus hear it which brings us to the current search process for a Dr. Mary Sue Coleman replacement.

The caller on the other end of the line, a well known Democrat, was breathless.  "It is on the street.  Snyder is going to Michigan."

But just a second.  Mr. Snyder is a Republican and Democrats, by a 6-2 margin, control the U-M Board of Regents which will pick the prez.  Why would they do it?  They would if labor told them to do it.

The strategy is clear.  Remove the incumbent from the contest and you enhance the chances of Democrat Mark Schauer becoming governor.

It makes sense on paper the speculators argue.

Nobody will confirm any of this, but think about it.  It's not too far-fetched to think early on in his life, private citizen Rick Snyder might have wanted the job.

But this is a gentleman who likes to get things done and in the current climate at the university, who really runs the joint?

You have an aggressive faculty with it's own agenda, you have the Regents who march to their own drummer and then there is the rest of the Maize and Blue world that is convinced it knows what is best for its alma mater.

Which leaves the person in charge, not really in charge.

Does that sound like something this governor would embrace?

Since you've never seen him discuss it, one can only speculate. But if you know Richard Dale Snyder and watch how he operates, you could bet a pair of Rose Bowl tickets, the answer would be a polite thanks but no thanks.

Besides if he was president, they'd have to drop all that Go Blue stuff for Go RPA instead.  That alone would disqualify him from the post.

And as for Mr. Schauer, he'll have to find another way to win.

Oh boy, the anti-Granholm mob will have fun with this.  They are talking in California about running the former Michigan governor for something as part of the “new generation” of D’s on the west bank.
