PHILADELPHIA -

Police say the life of a little girl waiting at her bus stop may have been saved by a caretaker who pushed her out of the way during a three-vehicle crash at a Feltonville intersection.

The incident unfolded around 7:20 a.m. at Third Street and Wyoming Avenue.

According to police, a man in his 50s was driving an older-model green Ford Explorer speeding northbound on Third Street.

"When he came to the intersection of Third and Wyoming, where there are stop signs, he disregarded those stop signs," Police Lt. Frank Vanore. "He was still operating that car at a high rate of speed. He struck two vehicles, one going east, one going west."

Those two cars, which happened to both be Toyota Camries, were sent into crashing into a house. One took out a stop sign. That's the corner where the 9-year-old girl was standing, waiting to be taken to a charter school.

"The caretaker probably saved the little girl's life by pushing her out of the way," Vanore said. "She did strike her head. The car did miss the little girl and the caretaker."

FOX 29's Stephanie Esposito, reporting from the scene, spoke off-camera with a man who is a medic with the Army National Guards. He was able to come out and hold pressure on the little girl's head until medics took her to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children.

The operator of the silver Camry was also injured and taken to a hospital in stable condition.

So, it seems none of the injuries are life-threatening, Vanore said.

"It could have been very serious," Vanore said of the wreck. "I think we were very lucky here today."

Police report that the driver of the Explorer is in custody, and they're going to investigate the possibility that he was under the influence. But police said they have not taken a statement from him yet, and no charges had been filed by mid-morning.
