SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Federal health experts are reporting a troubling trend involving those increasingly popular electronic cigarettes, a growing number of children are now trying them.

The Centers for Disease Control found an alarming increase in e-cigarette use among middle and high school students in the United States. Use among kids in grades 6  to 12 doubled to almost 7 percent in 2012. Recent use of e-cigarettes among 6 to 12 year-olds doubled as well.

The devices use a battery to deliver aerosol puffs containing nicotine to users. They're often sold in flavors that appeal to children like bubble gum, cotton candy and even orange cream soda.

The new study -- released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention -- is based on a questionnaire filled out by nearly 19,000 students in 2011 and another 25,000 in 2012.

While a bigger number of kids smoke traditional cigarettes,  health officials fear children are getting a first taste of nicotine through the electronic cigarettes before moving to regular ones.

The sale of e-cigarettes is not banned to minors in Michigan because they do not contain tobacco but many businesses have adopted their own policies against selling them to children.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
