ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WJBK) -

Motorists driving along I-75 are familiar with the daily bottleneck heading in and out of Detroit. But the Michigan Department of Transportation thinks a fourth lane would lessen the congestion.

MDOT is planning for a $850 million overhaul on an 18-mile stretch of I-75 from 8 Mile Road to South Boulevard in Pontiac, FOX 2's Amy Andrews reports.

The project would widen the interstate from three to four lanes in both directions. MDOT believes the project would take up to five years to complete.

Crews would rebuild interchanges and replace 47 bridges.

Andrews says there is no exact start date for the expansion plan.

FOX 2 has reached out to MDOT for further comment on the plans. Stay with myFOXDetroit.com for further updates as they become available.
