TEMPE, Ariz. -

Posted on YouTube for everyone to see -- a video of someone making an acrobatic dive off a bridge at Tempe Town Lake. Swimming is off limits there, but that didn't stop this person. Or the many others that apparently make the same jumps.

That's just one of several videos on YouTube showing similar stunts at Tempe Town Lake. But city officials are telling us they fear someone could get seriously hurt.

In the video, the man standing on top of the bridge looks experienced, almost relaxed moments before performing what's described as a gainer dive into the lake.

Those who frequent the park are alarmed by the act, worried the diver didn't make it.

Daniel Sardina, who works for Tempe Town Boat Rentals, points out the spot where he saw a guy recently jump -- a guy he says swam to the side of the lake and casually walked away. It was 8:30 in the evening.

The Mill Avenue Bridge is 34 feet tall. If you watch the YouTube video carefully, it looks like the guy is making the jump from this area down into water that's only about 20 feet deep.

"There's an ordinance that you're not allowed to swim in the Tempe Town Lake unless there's a special event that allows it," says Tempe Police Sgt. Mike Pooley.

Sgt. Mike Pooley is worried about the diver's safety as he is about the laws, and what lurks below could be deadly.

"We understand this person is probably trying to have a good time, trying to do something fun but at the same time we've seen this happen where people get hurt. People have died doing something like this."

The YouTube video ends with a splash, the diver surfaces, seemingly safe. Not enough reason for others to give it a try.

"I wouldn't do it myself, I would say it's extremely dangerous," says Sardina.

According to Tempe Police, that city ordinance that prevents anyone from swimming will get you a civil citation if you're caught in the water. There are no rules, ordinances or laws that prohibit anyone from jumping off the bridge.
