City May Renegotiate Lease With Angels Baseball, Name To Change Again?

Posted: Updated:
Anaheim, CA -

(FOX 11 / AP) The city of Anaheim is considering renegotiating its lease with the Angels in a bid to keep the baseball team in the Orange County city — and that may mean changing the team's name.

The city council will weigh a proposal Tuesday to shift an option the team currently has to leave Anaheim from 2016 to 2019, the Orange County Register reported.

That would pave the way for a broader renegotiation of the team's lease deal with the city, including a proposal to give the Angels exclusive control over the team's name and development rights in the parking lot surrounding the 47-year-old stadium.

"This is a framework to begin negotiations between the Angels and the city in good faith, which is why the opt-out date was changed," Anaheim Councilwoman Kris Murray told the newspaper. "The Angels have been a part of Anaheim and Orange County for generations, and we want to secure that they remain here for generations to come."

The move comes several years after the Angels and city fought a court battle over the team's name. The team is currently named the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Anaheim is also considering leasing the stadium parking lot to the team for $1 a year and letting the Angels develop the site. A study by the team and city estimates the stadium needs at least $130 million of work over the next 20 years and building on the parking lot could help cover those costs.

The city, which is also home to Disneyland, sees the baseball team as a major boost to the economy. It is also a source of city revenue, with Anaheim netting nearly $1 million last year from a cut in ticket sales.

Under the proposal, the city could receive less money from ticket sales but no longer have to pay an annual maintenance fee, the newspaper reported.

From Hal Eisner:

Tonight at 7pm Tampa Bay will play The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. At about the same time the Anaheim City Council will vote on whether to enter into negotiations with the team's owner Arte Moreno. In the last lease part of the deal was the team had to include the words "of Anaheim" in it's name. In the proposed lease Moreno wouldn't be forced to do that and do what he seemingly wants to do and that's change the name to The Los Angeles Angels.

Since the name changed in 2005 there has been an ongoing debate between many Anaheim residents about the name. James Mayfield, who admittedly is a Dodger fan, says get rid of the name Anaheim. LA is the city known around the world. Tony Nguyen says get rid of Los Angeles in the name. The team, he says, is not in LA. "It's in Anaheim. In Orange County!!"

The name game aside, there is much more to a potential re-up for the Angels. Ongoing maintenance. A major renovation. All at the team's expense.

Some will say it's not about the name it's about how you play. Maybe so. Fact of the matter is that there are other examples of regional naming.

Xavier, on my Facebook page says, when the NFL Rams fled L.A. to the OC they remained the Los Angeles Rams. That's true. Both the New York Jets and Giants play in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Another county and another state! The Dallas Cowboys play in Arlington,TX.

Bottom line, negotiations on a lease deal could last a while. A long while. And, until the name game ends there will likely always be some debate over what to call Anaheim's Angels!
