As authorities continue to investigate the Saturday morning shooting involving a police officer, the Austin Police Department has identified the officer and the suspects involved.
On Saturday around 12:30 a.m., police say Senior Police Officer Shane Cunningham responded to a burglary in progress at The Johnson Supply Company located in the 9400 block of Neils Thompson Drive.
Once on scene Cunningham says he witnessed 20-year-old Austin James Hanlon and 46-year-old Miguel Macias loading the tools into a car. He yelled at them to put their hands up, but he says the suspects got into their car and started ramming his police cruiser.
Cunningham fired several shots at the windshield, hitting Macias. Macias is in serious but stable condition.
Cunningham is recovering from a leg injury.
Macias has been charged with aggravated assault on a public servant with a deadly weapon, a first degree felony and burglary of a building, a state jail felony. Hanlon has been charged with burglary of a building, a state jail felony.
Officer Cunningham has been with the Austin Police Department since November 2002. He has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
