Batman vs Superman to use large portion of film credits

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

The blockbuster Batman vs Superman is expected to film here in Detroit, Metro Detroit, and elsewhere in Michigan starting early next year. But, some are concerned about the superhero-sized $35 million dollars in film incentives given to the movie.

Curt Howe with Charlie's Talent Agency worries the big motion picture eats up too much of the state's $50 million in film incentives for next year. With Low Winter Sun getting $9 million, that doesn't leave much for smaller films even though whatever money left over from this year will be rolled into next year.

"I like having a bunch of smaller films because they hire our local people," he says.

Howe is hoping the big Warner Brothers production will use local casting directors and local talent, not just "extras." Other local businesses say the new superhero movie is only good news for them.

"We've done like 12 major motion pictures," said Grace Keros with American Coney Island in Detroit. "We've been catering them, feeding them, and they love it. They use us as locations, catering off-site at the studio and it's been a lot of fun."

Like Low Winter Sun and Transformers but for some independent filmmakers from Grand Rapids, the state incentives don't mean a thing.

"For us little guys making out movies that we want to make here in Michigan it has zero impact because our budgets are so far below any qualifications needed," explained Joey Potrykus.

Even so, they too are happy to be filming Detroit and small budget or Superman - it's good to be in the D!
