Texas A&M released a statement Wednesday saying Texas
A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel will sit out the first half of Saturday's
season opener vs. Rice, the extent of his punishment for allegedly taking money
for autographing memorabilia.
In the statement, the school and the NCAA say they "confirmed
today that there is no evidence that quarterback Johnny Manziel received money
in exchange for autographs, based on currently available information and
statements by Manziel."
ESPN had reported brokers allegedly gave Manziel thousands
of dollars in exchange for autographing items during the past offseason.
Texas A&M said Manziel's punishment is for an "inadvertent
violation regarding the signing of certain autographs.
In addition to sitting out the first half vs. Rice, Manziel
will address his teammates about the situation and A&M will make changes to
how it informs athletes about rules on autographing items.
The NCAA says it will review any new information that could
come out and consider further punishment.
