Texas State yet to choose starting quarterback

Posted: Updated:

Texas State opens its season as a Sun Belt team Saturday at Southern Mississippi, but a starting quarterback has yet to be announced.

Texas State Head Coach Dennis Franchione says his top picks need a few more days of practice before he makes a decision.

"We've had great competition there. Both guys Tyler (Arndt) and Jordan (Moore) have done well. And Duke (DeLancellotti) is not too far behind. I really think it would be unfair to name one of them the starter today. Let them have a couple more days of practice at least before I think we get to the point in time," Franchione said.

Making a decision has been tough, Coach Franchione said.

"One day I think one of them is going to be the starter. Then the next day the other one does something and I think he's going to be the starter," Franchione said.

Many of the players believe the position will go to Tyler Arndt or Jordan Moore.

"We all have the understanding its Tyler or Jordan and everybody's fine with that. We know either one get in the game, they're gonna get the job done. We're not too much worried who's gonna get the job," wide receiver Isaiah Battle said.

Franchione says he has a plan in place for Saturday's game.

"We're going to play both of them in the first game. That's the plan. They both deserve to play," he said.

Last year, the Bobcats struggled defensively. Franchione says his transfers like Mike Orakpo, the younger brother of former Texas Longhorn Brian Orakpo and D.J. Yendrey from TCU, bring a lot of experience.

"They bring a lot of experience playing this level of football," he said.

Texas State senior linebacker Damion McMiller agrees.

"Guy like Orakpo, he just brings intensity. He's always intense all the time. He's always going hard. He's always ready to get the job done. And a guy like that just brings competition," McMiller said.

According to Franchione, the Bobcats have improved and he is hoping for a great season.

"I think this is a better football team. I hope our record and our games will show that," Franchione said.

It is unclear whether a starting quarterback will be announced after the first game.
