Residents complain of Tappan Zee Bridge replacement noise

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Residents who live near the Tappan Zee Bridge say that construction of a 1,200-foot construction platform on the Rockland County side is extremely loud. The platform is part of the massive bridge-replacement project on the Hudson River.

One resident described it as a repetitive clanging sound.

All that banging is expected to get even louder and last longer later this week. Pile driving will be taking place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays and from noon to 7 p.m. on the occasional Saturday.

Judy Hirschorn has lived in Nyack's Salisbury point co-op for more than 20 years. She said she could still hear the noise even with the windows closed and the air conditioning on.

In an effort to reduce the noise, officials have offered to pay for noise-reducing windows. However a settlement has not been reached yet.

Other Nyack residents said that right now the noise isn't that bad and regard it as progress.

The platform will allow crews to work from the water to build the ends of the 3-mile twin span.

Traffic has also been complaint lately. Due to construction on the almost $4 billion project, lane closures are happening more often.

The construction noise is expected to continue for the length of the project: at least five and a half years.
