TV show theme songs

MYFOXNY.COM -

A good TV show theme song (like the one from, say, "Happy Days") lodges in our brains for all of eternity. It can transcend television (think the "Twilight Zone"), race up a billboard chart ("Hawaii Five-O") or teach us to sing a ballad without lyrics ("Jeopardy"). But to accomplish any of that, a good TV show theme song must first introduce a good TV show.

"I've done music that I thought was great [and] the show was off in 13 weeks," music composer Edd Kalehoff said.

Kalehoff composed openings for "The Price Is Right," "ABC World News," and "Monday Night Football." He said the best themes sound the way their shows look and feel.

"Not just a slappy thing where good enough is good enough," Kalehoff said, "but it really does capture the DNA of what makes the show good."

Many of the TV-watchers Fox 5 found identified themes from shows ("Gilligan's Island," "Friends," "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," "I Love Lucy," and "The Patty Duke Show") that date back decades.

"It's funny, you can't hum the theme of Modern Family," media critic Bill McCuddy said.

McCuddy of Forbes.com attributed the death of the TV theme song to corporate greed and the audience's shorter attention span.

"It's really a question of money," McCuddy said. "It comes down to the amount of time they can sell advertising in."

The good news for those who prefer their shows begin with a catchy refrain? Reruns and syndication further preserve TV songs of yore in our memories.
