Locals 'get on the bus' for historic MLK 50th in DC

Posted: Updated:

At the site where the 1960's Civil Rights Movement was centered, dozens boarded buses Friday morning for a trip to honor two of its defining moments – the 1963 march on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. and Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s seminal "I Have a Dream" speech.

With bags packed, cameras on the ready and numerous stories to tell, people gathered at the landmark Ebenezer Baptist Church on Auburn Avenue in metro Atlanta. Their trip is destined to be a historic one. Some recalled attending the 1963 march. For others, it would be a chance to pay their respects.

Men, women and children gathered in front of the church's Horizon Sanctuary Friday morning to share their views about traveling to Washington, D.C. for the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington.

For some, it is their first time having the opportunity to commemorate the historic occasion. Others are reminiscing about the day that their co-pastor, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., proclaimed the famous phrase, "Free At Last! Free At Last! Thank God Almighty We Are Free At Last."
