She's already survived one heart surgery, but now a 20-month-old girl from El Mirage needs a second operation, and her family needs money to pay for not only the surgery, but a trip to Boston where the operation has to be performed.
The family has been seeking care at Phoenix Children's Hospital, but they recently found out that their daughter's next surgery must be in Boston. They've had many sleepless nights, figuring out how they're going to pay for the surgery, get there and pay for her follow up appointments.
"They broke her chest bone and then here was the tube that drained the excess blood around her heart," said Mykenzie Grace's mother, Jennifer Carro.
After her first open heart surgery, Jennifer and Adam Carro call their little girl a heart warrior.
"The left side of her heart was only at 17 percent, so they go through three different surgeries in order to proceed to correct her heart," said Adam.
Mykenzie was doing great until about a month ago. Fainting spells began and the family came straight to PCH.
"Right now, she was diagnosed with aortic stenoisis and sub aortic membrane," said Adam. "Together PCH and Boston decided it was in the best interest of Mykenzie to go back and have her open heart surgery."
The surgeon in Boston told the family they need to get Mykenzie across the country immediately.
Jennifer will have to take a leave of absence from her work as a pharmacy tech and Adam won't be able to keep up with his handyman jobs. They also have two older children to care for.
"It hurts that I had to reach out to help, but at the same time, I kinda know that the community will help us come together to achieve this," said Adam.
Since putting all of this info out on social media, two US Airways employees have donated three tickets to get the family to Boston, however they still need about $4,000 more to cover cost of surgery and staying in Boston for four to six weeks while having no income.
