Experts Still Baffled By Unusual Number Of Dolphin Deaths

Posted: Updated:

So far this summer, a total of 228 Dolphins have washed up along the East Coast. A majority of them were found on the 400 mile stretch of beaches between Long Island and Virginia.

Maggie Mooney-Seus with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, calls this an "Unusual Mortality Event" affecting bottlenose dolphins in the mid-Atlantic

"At this point, we have not made a determination as to what the cause of the mortality is. We're collecting as much information as we can from our stranding partners along the coast about any animals that strand," says Mooney-Seus.

In New Jersey alone, more than 60 dolphins have washed ashore this summer. A map from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center shows a red dot for a each dolphin that has died along the coast. The deaths range from as far South as Cape May, all the way up to Sandy Hook.

"This is an unusual summer for this," says Pete McCarthy.

Pete McCarthy is the unit coordinator at Sandy Hook, he says a total of four dolphins have washed up since June.

"It's much higher. I haven't seen this since I've been stationed here," says McCarthy.

On Long Island, at the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation, a dolphin is being nursed back to health. It was on June 6th where the dolphin, now named Roxanne by workers, was found on a sandbar suffering injuries near Fire Island.

"We typically don't necessarily see this type of dolphin. Our colleagues in New Jersey are seeing tremendous increase in bottlenose dolphins as well as in Virginia," says a caretaker.

Roxanne will be released back into the ocean next week.

Experts say this appears to be the most deadly season for Dolphins along the East Coast in 25 years.
