FOX 29 Getting Results: Massive Potholes

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

It was a longtime resident who contacted us about the hazard, but it was a local businessman who found a way to keep folks safe until we could respond.

The owner of a carpet and flooring store decided that a set of cardboard tubes wearing a traffic cone hat would be a good way to warn motorists and pedestrians about the nasty pothole on Richmond street at Indiana. He didn't want to talk about it on camera, but his buddy sounded downright proud.

"Yeah, well. It saves a lot of lives. It might not look good, but it saves lives," says Dominic Pilotta.

Dominic Pilotta has lived on this block for 28 years. He says that the hole has been here for several months, right in the path of drivers.

"When you first saw that, what went through your mind?" I asked.

"That a tire could fit right in there and knock the whole front of the guy's car out. You can't have holes like that in the street- especially in this street!" replied Pilotta.

Dominic says he called several city agencies, including the 311 system, without getting help.

"Anywhere else in the city, it would have been fixed already," says Pilotta.

I paid a visit to the nearby district office of state representative John Taylor. Turns out they'd been trying to get the hole filled for several weeks. The city streets department told them it was, in fact, a cave-in, and that work to repair it might be complete by mid-September.

Then I called the streets department and SEPTA to move things along. The transit authority responded by telling me they'll be out with the Streets Department by Wednesday, to begin repairing the street.

But here's the funny part: a Streets Department worker soon showed up to safeguard the site until work begins. He placed barricades around a small hole nearby, but left the cardboard tubes with the traffic cone hat in place.

They couldn't improve on this quintessential Philly solution!
