Memorial for City of Austin Employee Killed in Hit-and-run

Posted: Updated:

Saturday afternoon, friends and family members gathered to remember a City of Austin employee killed last weekend in a hit-and-run crash.  Luke Strabala, 42, was riding his motorcycle in Southeast Austin at Riverside and Ben White around 1 a.m. on August 10 when police say he was hit from behind by a vehicle and the driver left the scene.  Strabala was a pool mechanic for the city's parks and recreation department.  Friends organized the memorial at the Hancock Recreation Center.  They shared stories and his brother came in from Chicago to be there.

"We're hoping that someone will eventually come forward with a little bit information that will help identify the person who hit him, just for the sake of closure in the family," said Matthew Thomas Strabala.  "In a case like this certainly it's our family's loss, but it's a loss very evidently to his community here.  Also to co-workers and friends and his extended family in Austin."

Austin Police are still investigating the crash and searching for the driver who faces a felony charge of failure to stop and render aid.
