New security measures start at Cardinals preseason opener

Cardinals fans tried to keep their cool in Glendale as the team kicked off its preseason opener Saturday.

It was also the first game visitors had to abide by new security measures at the University of Phoenix Stadium.

Dozens of people at the Cardinals game came up to the security line with bags that didn't meet the new requirements.

They had to either have to throw the bags away or bring them back to the car.

You could call it the new fashion at NFL stadiums across the country, or as some football fans called the new "no purse" policy: an inconvenience.

"It's a real pain. Do you know how hard it is to find a small clutch or a plastic bag that suits what they are asking?" said Annette Draper.

The NFL policy allows clear plastic bags, like one gallon Ziplock bags or a clutch bag about the size of your hand. It must not exceed 12 inches by 6 inches; a change intended to keep fans safer.

The new rule states no more purses, backpacks or even camera bags.

"Our feminine products, our lipgloss, everything is noticeable here and then you got to throw the thing away that you got," said Anna Robledo.

Security officials handed out guidelines with what you can bring and what you can't bring. If you don't meet the requirements, you were headed back to the car.

"I got my daughter's medication and ice and they don't want to let me in, but I really need her medicine, but they're letting me this time," said Hortencia Alviso.

Fans were turned away because of their camera and binocular cases.

Countless cases, purses and bags were in the trash.

It was a price some fans were willing to pay to get through the stadium doors.

"If you want to go to the games, you got to abide by the rules, so I'm ok with it," said Dianne Alfred.

For fans who still want to go to the game, but don't want to put their things in a plastic ziplock bag, you can buy a fashionably clear bag from the Cardinals store.
