Groups work to save iconic mural

Two groups are working to restore the iconic Greetings from Austin mural on South First Street.

The mural was first painted in 1988 and has since deteriorated.

Roadhouse Relics Gallery and non-profit Creative Action held a fundraiser Thursday. They are hoping to raise $10,000 so the original artists can repaint the mural.

"It's sort of an iconic mural," Troy Madres said. "People, when they look at this mural, they really think about Austin. And it has elements to it that people have enjoyed for decades. Consider the bathers at Barton Springs, or the arches of the Congress Avenue Bridge, or the Lonestar flag."

The gallery also plans to hold an education day for Creative Action students when the mural is repainted.

They hope to start repainting in October.
