15-Year-Old-Boy Swept Away By Raging Pennypack Currents

Posted: Updated:

Along the water and in the air, multiple teams within the Philadelphia Police Department work with fire crews in a frantic search for a 15-year-old boy that got swept away in the raging waters of the Pennypack Creek on Tuesday evening.

The boy was playing with friends in the water to cool off when he hit his head on something before going under.

"His friend tried very valiantly to get to him. It just wasn't possible. The water was running too fast and the volume was too great," says Chief Inspector Joe Sullivan of Philadelphia Police.

Police say the boy's friends ran along the banks, trying to keep up with him and help, but ultimately lost sight of him in the fierce currents from Tuesday's heavy rainfall.

Divers prepped boats as officers came in on horseback and with dirt bikes to work the banks. At the same time, other crews monitored the area of the creek that meets the Delaware River about a mile away.

"It's just a shame. It's just a shame," says an onlooker. "It's horrible. I hope they find him alive. I really do because I wouldn't wish that on anybody."

A growing crowd of onlookers watched the search efforts unfold and hoped for the best. But hope was fading in each passing hour.

"Unfortunately, it does not appear at this time that we're going to be successful," says Sullivan

Police even had to pull a distraught 47-year-old woman out of the creek after she apparently tried to help out. Police say she didn't know the victim, and they took her in for an examination.

"We're going to begin to pull back our resources and we're going to end that part of the operation," says Sullivan.

Police say tonight that they will regroup tomorrow for continued recovery efforts.
