Mystery lizard in Brooklyn

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A photo taken by a Brooklyn resident shows a roughly three-foot lizard in the backyard. It may be a monitor lizard, but animal experts have not been able to see it in the flesh to identify it. It showed up in the backyard of a townhouse on Osborne Street in Brownsville and freaked out residents who took pictures with a cell phone.

Angelo Bruno called the police who contacted Animal Care and Control. Workers theorized the lizard is coming out of a hole in the back staircase and then wandering around the weed-covered backyard.

Animal Control dug a hole and put a camera inside and noted a bunch of new tunnels the lizard has dug.

So where does the lizard come from? Bruno said his neighbors believe a man who used to live a couple of doors away let his pet lizard go when he moved out.

A spokesman for Animal Care and Control said they didn't observe any lizards Tuesday but will follow up again Wednesday.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
