The Talker: Younger children getting cell phones

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

There's something kids desperately want to bring back to school with them this fall and it's not pencils, notebooks, or backpacks. They want cell phones -- smart phones to be exact.

The latest numbers suggest kids as young as elementary school are getting the gadget. One survey says that 85 percent of high school kids have phones; almost 70 percent of kids 11 to 14 years old and 31 percent of 8 to 10 year olds.

That means almost a third of kids, starting in third grade, have cell phones.

That study is from a couple years ago, so we can only assume the numbers have gone up. In fact, a study from last fall says 13 percent of kids from ages 6 to 10 already carry a phone.

Many parents say this is strictly a safety issue, taking advantage of modern technology to keep tabs on their kids. Most kids admit they don't care what the justification is -- they just want their phones.
