It's almost time to send the kids back to school, but many kids in our area aren't prepared because their families cannot afford the supplies needed for the classroom. On Saturday many local organizations began a new effort to help out.
Hundreds of needy children stood in the August heat at Harvey Penick Golf Campus waiting for a free backpack full of school supplies.
Walmart is teaming up with the first tee and other area non-profits as well as local first responders to put on a 'Back to School Bash.'
"It really shows that there's a need in the community and we are really happy that we were able to help." said Kellie Duar Gonzalez, Director of Public Affairs, for Walmart.
The first 300 school children at the event received a special prize bag full of back to school items.
