Austin Police have arrested a man they say attempted to sexually assault a woman in the laundry room of her northwest Austin apartment over the weekend.
Daleph Albarran, 30, was arrested and charged with attempted sexual assault in connection to the incident.
The incident took place at an apartment complex in the 6800 block of Wood Hollow Drive Saturday night. According to the arrest affidavit, the victim went to the laundry around 9:30 PM. She told investigators that she noticed a man, later identified as Albarran, standing in front of the door to the laundry room. After fumbling with the handle, he entered the laundry room in front of the victim.
Once inside he stood in front of one of the washing machines playing on his phone. The victim went about putting her clothes in a washing machine and said she noticed Albarran was sitting in a chair behind her. She became concerned and left the laundry room.
Investigators said the victim returned to the laundry room around 11:30 PM to get her clothes and noticed the laundry room was dark. As she entered the room she was grabbed from behind and punched in the face several times. The arrest affidavit alleges that Albarran then grabbed the victim and pulled her to the other side of the room. He allegedly put his hands down her skirt and ripped her underwear. The victim fought back by kicking, punching, and scratching her attacker.
A maintenance man on the property heard a loud crash and screaming coming from the laundry room. When he approached the room he saw that the window had been broken out and the lights were off. He heard the woman screaming but could not see what was going inside. He did not have his key to the laundry room and began banging on the door asking to be let inside.
Police say that was the point at that Albarran ran out of the laundry. The victim yelled that he had been trying to rape her. The maintenance man chased him until he lost sight of him.
Police arrived at the scene and searched the area. They found a set of Cadillac keys outside the laundry room on the ground. They searched the parking lot and found a black Cadillac CTS that the keys were able to unlock.
According to investigators, Albarran was in the backseat covered up by a blanket. Police said he matched the description given by several witnesses. Officers said he was sweating and had several fresh scratches on his arms, legs, and stomach. They also found women's panties in plain view of the vehicle.
Albarran was interviewed by detectives and admitted being at the apartment building court paperwork indicates. According to detectives, Albarran said he was out drinking and became concerned he would get a DWI. He said stopped at the apartments and decided to laundry. He also claimed he was drinking beer in the laundry room with the lights off so nobody would call the police. He said he did not remember anything after that.
