`National Day of Johns Arrests` nets 359 apprehensions nationwide

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A movement to crack down on prostitution in Cook County has spread nationwide.

Police in 17 states have arrested 323 people trying to pay for sex and 36 pimps during the "National Day of Johns Arrests." The suspects range in age from 17 to 79 years old.

The sweep ran for 21 days from July 7 through July 28, bringing together 36 agencies in a widespread crackdown.

Cook County Sheriff's police say it's important to highlight the role of "johns" in the cycle of prostitution.

"This broad national partnership and the sheer number of arrests should send a strong message to prospective sex solicitors that their 'hobby' will inevitably land them in jail or worse," said Sheriff Dart. "No longer should sex trafficking be viewed as a victimless crime. These women have been brutalized and taken advantage of - and the most effective way to deter these heinous crimes is to target the demand."

Dart launched the "Day of Johns" crackdowns six years ago. In that time, the collaborative effort has resulted in the arrests of 1,473 total johns.
