San Antonio mother to be deported

Posted: Updated:

Many people rallied outside Congressman Lloyd Doggett's office in downtown Austin on July 30 with hopes to stop the deportation of a San Antonio mother.

Living in the U.S. for over a decade and mother of three-year-old boy, Maria Veronica Ayala is set to be deported on August 1. Members of the University Leadership Initiative, a group of students who help fight for immigration reform, hope to keep Ayala and her family in the country. The group also hopes to give Ayala opportunity to stay and raise her son in America.

"Well, because Damian is a citizen he has a right to stay in this country," said Vice President Deborah Alemu. "However, he's four years old and unable to take care of himself.  So he would either then go with her to a country he's never been to and/or stay here with family relatives."

Over 1,100 people have signed a petition to keep Ayala in this country. The rally outside Doggett's office was an effort to provide a voice for 11 million Americans without papers, who face future deportation.
