Smithville Fire Department issued voluntary evacuations for an area in Bastrop County, just southeast of Copeland Hill Road and FM 2571 due to a brushfire that has grown to 220 acres.
Voluntary evacuations were issued for residents living north of Dump Rd. to Upton Rd. and all residents on Copeland Hill Dr.
Officials say they received a call notifying them of the fire around 4 p.m. The caller reported it started the under power lines at their property, located off of Dump Ground Road.
When firefighters arrived, it was more than they could handle. There are about 100 firefighters helping and two STARFlight choppers, Huey helicopter and an EC-145 are conducting aerial water drops from the Colorado River.
Thirty-six homes have been evacuated. Those are located along Copeland Hill Road, Camanche Ridge, and Mountain Valley. Residents are taking shelter at the First Baptist Church, in the Rec Center.
Firefighters say they will likely have control over the fire by midnight. But residents have been told to prepare to be out of their homes for days.
