Lawmakers expected to pass transportation measures

Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Texas Senate has passed one part of a legislative package to boost funding for roads and bridges.

The Senate voted Monday to approve a law that would give the Legislative Budget Board control of the money flowing into the Rainy Day Fund. House Bill 16 works with a proposed constitutional amendment to divert 50% of the money going into the Rainy Day Fund to spend on roads and bridges. The board would set a minimum balance for the fund.

If approved by voters in November 2014, the measures could add more than $848 million in transportation spending.

The Senate was one vote short of approving the constitutional amendment Monday afternoon.

In the House, supporters worked to rally two-thirds support to send the measure to voters.
