A motorcade of officers with the Austin Police Department and Travis County Sheriff's Office rolled up to Hill Country Bible Church on RR 620 Monday morning to escort the body of Sgt. Chris Doles to his final resting place.
"We always provide escort services," said Travis County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Stan Roper. "I'm the motorcycle sergeant for Travis County. We work well with APD motorcycle unit and we're providing the escort today."
Law enforcement from other agencies across Central Texas showed up to attend the funeral service for the 47-year-old Lakeway Police Sergeant. Tyrone Robinson worked with Doles for 20 years when both were members of the Waco Police Department.
"He was a very loyal person. (He was) loyal to his co-workers, friends and family," Robinson told FOX 7. "In police work it's a brotherhood of young men sometimes and if God agrees we grow old together, so we grew up together."
Thursday morning Doles was on his way to work on RR 620 when he crossed into oncoming traffic and hit another vehicle. His Toyota Tundra ended up on the side of the road and hit a pole. Doles was killed. The other driver wasn't hurt. Austin Police are still investigating the crash.
Robinson says he was shocked when he heard about Doles' death.
"It was a big pause, any time that happens, especially to a brother that you've been close to and been in the trenches with," Robinson said.
Inside the funeral service friends and fellow officers spoke about Doles who joined the Lakeway Police Department in 2011. He leaves behind a wife and three children and was also a guardian to his niece and nephew.
Lakeway Police Chief Todd Radford said, "He knew what it meant to serve the public, he was a generous provider a loving husband, and a caring father."
After the service, hundreds of officers lined up to be part of the motorcade. The long procession ended in Pflugerville where Sgt. Doles was laid to rest.
