Voter registration now available online

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Gov. Pat Quinn on Saturday signed a bill that aims to make registering to vote, voting, and tracking results of elections easier for Illinois voters.

These days it seems nearly everyone has access to the Internet. In most cases, it's in the palm of their hand.

When it comes to online shopping, Google searches, and Facebook status updates, all it takes is a few clicks and you're there.

And soon, you'll even be able to register to vote online. "Whether you are young or old, we want you involved," said IL Governor Pat Quinn.

Governor Quinn signed legislation today to allow online voter registration, making Illinois the 18th state to do so. Supporters of House Bill 2418 said it's good for the democratic process.

The new law will not go into effect until July of 2014. Once it does though, those who register will need only their driver's license and the last four digits of their social security number to participate.

One civic group said Illinois has 500 thousand people who are eligible to vote, but don't because it's not convenient.

Currently, voters must go in person to register or do so while they renew their driver's license. Officials said the process is clumsy paperwork that costs the state 83 cents for each application. The new process, however, only costs three cents.
