TEMPE, Ariz. -

Tempe police are investigating a fatal collision involving a pedestrian and a light rail train on Apache east of McClintock.

An officer was flagged down near the Apache substation Friday afternoon and told there appeared to be a body near the light rail tracks. Officers arrived and found a deceased man with obvious impact injuries.

Authorities believe the point of impact was at Sycamore and Main in Mesa. The train was traveling westbound into Tempe. The light rail operator did not realize anything had happened.

Westbound Apache was closed from Price to McClintock for the investigation. Police had a lot of evidence to gather on and near the light rail track.

It's too early to tell whether this was an accident or a suicide, and what may have occurred.

Police have identified the body as 28-year-old Wade L. Stokley.

When officers first saw the body, they say they were unable to tell if it was a man or woman because the body was so mangled.

Tempe Police Lt. Scott Smith said they are looking for any witnesses to shed light on what happened. Mesa Police Det. Steve Berry said they will be reviewing surveillance video.

One witness told FOX 10 that Stokley threw himself in front of the train and was "severed in half."

Mesa Police and Valley Metro are assisting in the investigation.

Light rail service in both directions was suspended for hours Friday afternoon. It resumed by 6:30 p.m.
