The man accused of killing 36-year-old David Villarreal in his downtown apartment is now in custody. Officers have now identified the killer as 26-year-old Matthew Henry Bacon.

According to the arrest affidavit, Bacon freely spoke to detectives after being read his Miranda Warning. Bacon stated he met Villarreal at "Rain" bar and went home with him. Once in the apartment, Bacon stated he retrieved a hammer from under the kitchen sink and forcefully struck Villarreal in the back of the head several times. Afterwards, Bacon retrieved a knife from the kitchen and cut the throat of the victim. Bacon cleaned the apartment, left on foot and returned in a red coupe to steal the property he wanted.

Bacon confirmed that he either sold or gave away several of the electronics he stole from Villarreal's residence. Detectives had followed Bacon's tracks to the cities of Belton and Harker Heights through Villarreal's iPhone and iPad usage tracking information.

Bacon was also seen on surveillance footage at a gas station in Hearne, Texas driving the same 2004 Chevrolet Caviler Coupe he was in on the night of the murder. Bacon also used Villarreal's Mastercard to book several hotels he stayed at while on the run.

He was arrested at The Pilot gas station in West Monroe, Louisiana and was charged with possession of a controlled substance. After his arrest, Bacon informed detectives that some of the stolen articles were still in his vehicle, including the knife and hammer he used to brutally beat Villarreal.

Bacon is being charged with Murder in the 1st Degree.
