Toddler nearly drowns in Phoenix canal

Updated:
PHOENIX -

Another tragedy tonight involving kids and water. Not in a pool this time, but in a canal on the west side of Phoenix Thursday morning.

We hear about the dangers of kids and swimming pools. But canals are dangerous too. They're all over the city.

This 34-year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department has seen a lot. But she was in tears after pulling a 2-year-old boy out of the canal.

"The officer involved, she did her job to the best of her ability, acted heroically when she did this, but she is noticeably shaken on this situation," says Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson.

Abbot 10 a.m. a man noticed a little boy floating in the water and called 911. Police were nearby and raced over.

They believe the boy was being watched by some teenaged family members who somehow lost track of him. He made it to the water and fell in.

What is especially dangerous about a canal is, it has a current and it moves faster than you may think and if you fall in, it is difficult to get out. And if you are a little child, it is impossible.

The little boy was unresponsive with no pulse when the officer pulled him from the canal.

Firefighters attempted CPR and rushed the child to the hospital in extremely critical condition.

The scene sent shock waves through the neighborhood.

We hear Dave Munsey say it all the time and it is so important: watch your kids around water.
