Firefighters save dog in east Austin apartment fire

Posted: Updated:

An apartment fire in east Austin almost cost a dog its life.

It happened at the Rosewood Apartments on East Poquito Street.

AFD says the fire started in the bedroom of a second-floor apartment.

Eight people who lived there ran outside, but their dog was overcome by the smoke. Firefighters found the dog inside.

"Immediately took the dog out of its cage, brought it out, the dog wasn't breathing at the time, they used what we call a pet respirator and that brought her back. The dog's name is Layla and is happy now and is running around," Austin firefighter Randy Elmore said. "Anytime we save anybody's lives it's a victory for us."

FOX 7 was told Layla is going to be fine.

A woman in the home was also treated for smoke inhalation and released by paramedics.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
