Calif. deputy rescues man from fiery taxi wreck

Posted: Updated:

YORBA LINDA, Calif. (AP) - A sheriff's deputy in Southern California is being praised for pulling an incoherent man from a burning taxi cab in a rescue that was captured by a patrol car dashboard camera.

The Orange County Register reported Tuesday ( ) that Shayne Stiefel and another Orange County sheriff's deputy came upon a minivan taxi in flames while out patrolling.

The cab had struck a curb and was wedged against a road sign.

The disoriented driver was pressing the accelerator so hard the tires were stripped bare.

Stiefel says friction from the spinning wheels caused fluid leaking from the car to catch fire.

Stiefel reached through the open window, used a knife to cut away the driver's seatbelt and dragged him out.

The unidentified driver was taken to a local hospital.
