Over 150 kids participate in AFDs Pass Torch basketball camp
Over 150 children from across Austin are getting a chance to learn about the basics of basketball and firefighting at a special summer camp.
It's all part of Austin Fire Department's Pass the Torch basketball camp, which kicked off Wednesday, July 24.
Kids get to shoot hoops and learn new basketball skills. They also get to learn about fire safety... And what it takes to be a firefighter.
Austin Fire Chief Rhoda Mae Kerr says there's one consistent between the two main subjects of the camp.
"Most important is teaching them values. The values that make you a good basketball player. The values that make you a good firefighter. And teaching them some life safety skills and maybe saving their life one day," Kerr said.
