SWAT situation ends with suspect in custody

Posted: Updated:

An Austin man is in police custody after a SWAT standoff at his home located off Spicewood Springs lasted several hours Tuesday afternoon.

The SWAT Team responded to a call in the 8600 block of Spicewood Springs in northwest Austin where a suspect with a robbery warrant barricaded himself inside a house.

According to APD, the suspect initially opened his door but immediately closed it when he realized APD was on the other side. APD continuously knocked on the door but the suspect would not answer. SWAT Team was called to the residence to respond the situation.

One neighbor described the man as a friendly guy who's been down on his luck.

"It's extremely shocking. I can't get home, I'm worried about the safety of everyone there, but I'm also worried about him, because I don't want it to turn into anything violent. But the primary thing is, all of us have been shoved out of the apartment, and I just want it to be over," Leeza Bearden said.

Police say the suspect was taken into custody without incident just before 7 p.m.
