Torrential Downpours Causes Partial Building Collapse

Posted: Updated:
MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. -

You've heard the expression torrential downpours. How's half a foot in two to three hours? It's enough to knock out the foundation of a house, and create a huge sink hole.

John Moroney has never seen the Rancocoas Creek get so high, so fast..

"It rose 5'5 feet," he says.

But the flooded back yard is the least of his worries. The water swirled around the front and then took the foundation out.

"His foundation totally collapsed," describes Dan Stevens, a neighbor. "You can see his washing machine floating in the basement."

Across the street Dan Stevens' yard used to be grass, until the creek carried his gravel driveway away and created another smaller sinkhole on his property.

"It makes me think what's underneath? Is it that hollow? Is my foundation going to collapse at some point," asks Stevens.

Michelle Phillips' husband found the sinkhole as he was leaving for work. She says they've been running a sump pump all day.

"It looked like white water river just rushing," says Phillips. "I'm concerned because we're going to get more rain."

PGW is out here shutting off the gas lines. As for the homeowner, he says his family has flood insurance. And he's just thankful no one was injured.
