'48 Hour Film Project' participants compete for spot at Cannes

Hundreds of teams of filmmakers will compete this weekend in a 48-hour race to complete a short film.

It's part of a worldwide competition put on by the 48 Hour Film Project.

Competitors will be given a movie genre, character, prop and line of dialogue they're required to put into the 4-to-7 minute movie. They have to write, shoot, and edit the entire things in just two days. Films submitted even one minute late will be disqualified.

The winner will be awarded $5,000 and a spot at the Cannes International Film Festival.

The Detroit competition begins at 7 p.m. Friday, July 19 and ends at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 21.
