Fox 5 asked some New Yorkers about some myths and facts about coping with the heat.

True or false: eating spicy foods will help you cool down. True.

Turns out people from the hottest climates like India, Malaysia and Mexico tend to dine on spicy cuisine. Nutritionists say a super spicy meal induces sweating which may help cool you down.

True or false: fans are the best way to stave off heat in a heat wave. False.

Fans alone don't provide the right amount of cool air especially when it comes to protecting older adults and young children.

True or false: during a heat wave Texans cope better than New Yorkers. True.

After spending a lot of time living in places with hot weather, people get used to it. The body acclimates more quickly. The American Academy of Family Physicians reports more people died in heat waves in northern cities.

True or false: dry heat is better than humid heat. True.

When you sweat in dry heat the moisture on the skin evaporates and helps cools the body. In humid air it the heat sticks on the skin making us feel, well, sticky.

True or false: listening to the radio will make you smarter during a heat wave. True.

Studies show people who stay informed on the radio, TV, or internet about the forecast are better able to understand the risks in extremely hot weather.

True or false: don't worry about the medicines you normally take during a heat wave. False.

Some medicines have side effects of dehydration you have to be careful when you take your meds.

True or false: if you feel like you're going pass out you should jump into the nearest body of water. False.

If you don't feel well call a doctor -- don't take a dive.
