Novi couple found dead after apparent murder-suicide

NOVI, Mich. (WJBK) -

Police in Novi are investigating an apparent murder-suicide at a home on Porter Street. We have learned the couple was going through a divorce.

We were told the couple's 16-year-old son was downstairs watching television. His mother, 55-year-old Lisa Bowman Christenson, and stepfather, 59-year-old Gunar Christenson, were in the master bedroom.

Police said Tuesday morning it appears Gunar grabbed his shotgun and shot Lisa twice in the bathroom, then went into the bedroom closet and turned the gun on himself.

Sources said there was a chair wedged in the door from inside the bedroom confirming this was a domestic situation.

We have learned the couple had already filed for divorce, and when they did not show for a Tuesday morning deposition, an attorney called for a welfare check.

Lisa's son, who was at home at the time, but did not see or hear anything, was taken to the police station before officers searched the home. He is now staying with family.

We were told Lisa's daughter is away at college.

The couple may have been in the middle of a messy divorce, but a family member told us there had been no signs of violence in the past, and they have no idea what caused the husband to snap.

Family members are upset and distraught about what happened, but they said they want people to know that Lisa was a great person and a loving sister, mother and friend.

The autopsies are expected to be conducted on Wednesday.
