WYANDOTTE, Mich. (WJBK) -

The Downriver Dive Team, police and fire were all on scene at the Detroit River in Wyandotte on Monday night searching through the storm for a red pickup truck that crashed through the railing and plunged into the water. It was not clear at the time just how many people were inside.

"We had one person say there was two people in the car, one said three, so our concern, of course, was getting down there, but the weather was a bit of a hindrance," explained Police Chief Dan Grant. "We had to pull our divers a couple times because there was heavy lightening in the area."

Grant said the truck was finally pulled from the water around 2 a.m.

Police said the driver, 54-year-old Carol Anne Emans of Redford, had been sitting in the truck drinking a beer before throwing it out the window and hitting the gas, going right into the river.

Police said they have also learned she had been battling depression.

Emans family declined comment, but a family friend told us she is simply in shock and remembers her as a beautiful person with a zest for life.

The sad scene brought back memories for many of the 1989 murders of four children. Lawrence Delisle drove his car into the river to kill his wife and kids. The wife survived. Delisle is spending the rest of his life in prison.

"People in this community remember the Delisle case because with the innocent children that were killed in that vehicle, that was a very sad case, and a lot of people were thinking of that right away," Grant remarked.

The chief said if anything can be learned from this tragedy, it is that hope and help are available for people struggling with suicidal thoughts.

"The sad part is if somebody's that distraught, it's really a shame that they couldn't get the help that they need because she was a young woman, and we hate to see something like this happen that could've been prevented," Grant said.
